Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park, also known as Zhongguancun National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone, referred to as Zhongguancun, is a high-tech industrial gathering area of the People's Republic of China. It started in Haidian District of Beijing and developed into an “Electronic Street” in the 1980s and 1990s. Zhongguancun is China's first national high-tech industrial development zone, the first national independent innovation demonstration zone, and the first “national” talent zone. People around Zhongguancun, especially the students from the surrounding universities, are used to jokingly referred to as “villages”. Zhongguancun has now become a high-end industrial functional area covering 16 districts and counties in Beijing and Tianjin Zhongguan Park in Tianjin, and is also known as “China's Silicon Valley”. In November 2016, Zhongguancun Science Park and Tianjin Binhai New Area jointly established Tianjin Quanhai-Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park, the first comprehensive reform pilot zone of China's inter-provincial administrative region.
